Signwriting is (yes you can still find the occasional sign writer) a highly skilled process where signs and vehicles are hand painted by an artist who has undergone many years of formal training. Before scanners plotters and wide format printers, images and words had to be copied and enlarged by hand. A sign written van or fascia could take days to complete and corrections were almost impossible to make, without having to start all over again.
Since the advent of computer aided technology, in the 1980’s, designs can be created and proofed easily and lettering, images and logos can be produced in self-adhesive vinyl. Most vehicles can be fully liveried in 3 -4 hours, smaller signs and stickers can be produce in their hundreds in an hour. Likewise a 4m x 1.5 m banner can be ready in in no time. A set of hoarding panels, 1.2 m x 2.4 m can be ordered on a Monday and fitted on site complete with images and wording, within a week.
Illuminated or non-illuminated signs and 3D lettering again used to be constructed by dedicated teams of draughtsmen and engineers. These people working with precision tools took many days, if not weeks, to complete a sign and at a very high cost , The advances offered by modern equipment such as routers have reduced this time scale immensely, and proportionally speaking the cost of these items has dropped over the years.
